Garberg and Zapata Grab Wins at Sac State Nike Elite Track & Field Invite
Freshmen Layman and Andrews run into school's top ten lists.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Washington State's McKenzie Garberg won the women's discus and Moreno Zapata won the men's triple jump Saturday at the Sacramento State Nike Elite Invitational Track & Field Meet at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex.
A 2007 All-American, Garberg, a senior, from Benton City, Wash., won the discus Saturday with an improved NCAA Regional Qualifying mark and personal-best throw of 174-feet, 3 inches (53.11m). It is the fourth-best women's discus throw in school history. Garberg also finished second in the shot put (46-0 1/2/14.03m), and third in the hammer (189-7/57.78m).
Zapata, a junior, Tacoma, Wash., won the triple jump with a leap of 49-0 3/4 (14.95m), just 1 3/4 inches away from an NCAA RQ mark.
Anna Layman, redshirt freshman, Spokane Valley, Wash., dropped her 800m time for the second consecutive week, reaching an NCAA RQ and lifetime-best time of 2 minutes, 8.31 seconds for third place in the race. She ran the first 400m of the race in a time of 58.5 seconds.
Freshman Amanda Andrews from Gig Harbor, Wash., debuted in the 3000m steeplechase by running a time of 11:01.98, seventh-best school all-time records.
Other notable performances included the men's javelin performances from Jon Jeffreys, who placed second with a throw of 219-10 (67.01m) which equaled his season-best and NCAA RQ mark, and Nathan Bache who threw a distance of 200-1 (61.00m) for eighth. Phil MacArthur placed fifth in the hammer with a throw of 190-9 (58.14m) which is an NCAA RQ but MacArthur established a better mark last weekend. Evan Blanshan finished third in the men's steeplechase with a time of 9:28.89.
Selected Washington State student-athletes will compete next week at the Texas Relays, April 2-5 in Austin, and many of the Cougars' distance runners will compete at the Stanford Invite, April 4-5.
