Swartz Wins Canadian Junior Championships High Jump

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Incoming Washington State University freshman Shawn Swartz won men's high jump at the Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships last weekend at the Jane & Gerry Swan Track at Rotary Stadium in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada.

Swartz, from Coquitlam, B.C., high jumped a personal-best height of 7-feet, 1/4 inch (2.14m) to win the juniors title Sunday, July 27. He was the 2007 British Columbia junior high jump champion and placed third at this meet in 2007 and competes for the Coquitlam Cheetahs Track Club.

A pair of incoming Cougar women throwers fared well last weekend but at the 42nd USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships at Burke High School in Omaha, Nebraska.

Ashley Kenney, from West Valley High, Spokane Valley, Wash., finished fourth in the young women's discus with a throw of 136-6 (41.61m) while Pullman High graduate Anna Albrecht took sixth place after throwing 133-7 (40.71m). Albrecht, running for the Comets Track Club, also placed fifth in the young women's shot put with a heave of 43-1 1/2 (13.14m). Kenney competed for the Greater Spokane Track Club.

Incoming WSU freshman hurdler Brittnay Crabb, from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., ran in the young women's 400m hurdles and in the 4x400m relay at the Junior Olympic meet. She just missed qualifying for the intermediate hurdles final, running a time of 1-minute, 2.8 seconds for ninth place in the prelims. Crabb also ran the second leg of the Inland Empire Sprinters' 1600m relay that finished third in the prelims with a time of 3:50.89, and seventh in the final in a time of 3:50.80.

All four of these competitors will join the Cougar track and field team in the 2008-09 season as freshmen.
