Cougar Lose Tourney Opener to BYU 4-0

Feb. 27, 2003

Box Score

LEWISTON, Idaho - - Washington State couldn't overcome a strong pitching effort by BYU starter Jeff Mousser, dropping their first game of the Banana Belt Tournament 4-0 Thursday at Harris field.

Mousser (3-0) pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing just five hits. WSU starter Tony Banaszak (0-3) pitched seven innings, allowing four runs on eight hits in the losing effort.

WSU dropped to 1-9. BYU improved to 3-6.

At the plate, WSU was led by freshman right fielder Jay Miller, who went 2 for 4. Doug Jackson and Ranger Wiens had two hits each to lead BYU.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth, when BYU pushed two runs across, taking a 2-0 lead. BYU then added single runs in the sixth and eighth innings.

WSU's best scoring opportunity came in the top of the second. After Bruce Jacobsen struck out, Derek Bruce singled to left field and followed with a steal of second base. Jeff LaRue followed with a walk. Both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch by Mousser. But the next batter, Collin Henderson grounded into a double play to end the inning.

WSU continues play in the four-day tournament tomorrow against Portland at 1 p.m.
