LEWISTON, Idaho - - Washington State had its highest offensive output of the season, beating host Lewis-Clark State 12-4 in the Banana Belt Tournament Saturday at Harris Field.

For WSU (3-9), starter Karl Mejlholm (1-1) allowed five hits and two earned runs in seven innings of work to notch the win. Marc Kaiser (2-1) pitched four innings for LCSC (8-1), surrendering three runs on eight hits in the losing effort.

At the plate, WSU pounded out 15 hits. Derek Bruce, a Lewiston native, was 3-of-4, collecting two doubles and a three-run home run, his second of the season. Steve Mortimer also added three hits and hit his first homer of the season. Jay Miller and Jeff LaRue each added two hits.

The Cougars got out front early, scoring single runs in the second, third and fourth innings. Mortimer's shot in the second gave WSU a 1-0 lead. The Cougars pushed another run across in the third, when Bruce scored on a Grant Richardson single. In the fourth, WSU increased its advantage to 3-0, when Bruce Jacobsen scored from first base on a Mortimer double.

LCSC got two back in the bottom of the frame, cutting the Cougar lead to 3-2.

WSU then opened up its lead with five runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Zapper McGrath and Miller both reached and the duo advanced on a balk by Warrior pitcher Cam McCoy. Bruce followed with a walk to load the bases. McGrath scored from third on another balk by McCoy. Miller then scored on a wild pitch from McCoy. After Jacobsen walked, Mortimer singled off new pitcher Kevin Welch, plating Bruce. After Wes Falkenborg was intentionally walked to load the bases, LaRue singled, bringing home Jacobsen and Mortimer, giving the Cougars an 8-2 lead.

The Warriors scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh, but WSU responded with a four-run eighth. With LaRue and Jon Baeder on, Miller singled to left field, scoring LaRue. Bruce followed with a blast to dead-centerfield, extending the Cougar lead to 12-3.

LCSC added one more run in the bottom of the eighth to complete the scoring.

WSU is now 2-1 in the tournament and can clinch at-least a tie first in the four-team field with a win tomorrow against Gonzaga. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m., with Aaron MacKenzie expected to pitch for the Cougars.
