Washington Defeats Cougar Baseball

May 9, 2008

SEATTLE - Washington posted a 12-3 victory over Washington State in Pacific-10 Conference baseball at Husky Ballpark, Friday night.

The Huskies (29-16, 9-7 Pac-10) broke a 3-3 tie by touching up three Washington State (26-21, 5-11 Pac-10) relievers for eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

"Give all the credit to Washington," WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "We put ourselves in position to win, but our bullpen had one bad inning that made the difference."

Washington took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning on a Troy Scott home run and a RBI-single by Andy Lentz.

The Cougars answered with a three-run home run by Paul Gran, his 10th of the season, in the top of the sixth off Jorden Merry (8-0). Washington tied the game 3-3 on Kyle Conley's solo home run in the bottom of the sixth.

Andrew Davis (5-3) came out of the WSU bullpen in the seventh and gave up a double, hit a batter, and recorded an out on a sacrifice bunt to put runners at second and third with one out. After Steve Kost gave up a walk to load the bases, Michael Ratigan walked Bradley Boyer to force in the go-ahead run and gave up a two-run double to Kyle Conley as the Huskies grabbed a 6-3 lead.

Aaron Russell and Michael Burger each added a run-scoring single, Brian Pearl singled in two and Joey Dunn capped the rally with a RBI-double.

The Cougars and Huskies battle again, Saturday at 2 p.m.
