Cougar Baseball Downs Alumni 13-1

Oct. 6, 2007

PULLMAN, Wash. - Cody Bartlett was 3-for-3 with a double, triple and three runs batted in to lead the Washington State baseball team past the Cougar Alumni 13-1 Saturday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Paul Gran added a two-run home run for the winners, who scored in every inning but the seventh in the seven-inning affair. Gran's blast came with one-out in the bottom of the first inning off former Major League pitcher Todd Belitz and gave the Cougars a 2-1 lead.

After Washington State tallied single runs in the second, third and fourth innings, the Cougars put the game away with a four-run fifth.

Matt Fanelli led off the fifth with a single and came around to score on Bartlett's triple in the right field corner. Simi Reynolds plated Bartlett with a single to right to make it 7-1. Reynolds moved to second on a wild pitch and was singled to third by Scott Suttmeier. Gran and Ryan Peterson capped the rally with run-scoring ground outs. The Cougars culminated the scoring with a four-run sixth inning highlighted by Peterson's three-run double.

Three Cougar pitchers combined to hold the Alumni to three hits, all singles. The Alumni's lone run came in the top of the first when Collin Henderson walked, moved to third on a Jason Freeman single and scored two batters later on Mike Gilbert's sacrifice fly.

Next up for Washington State is the annual Crimson and Gray World Series beginning Monday at Bailey-Brayton Field. The Cougars begin their regular season Feb. 22 when they host Creighton in the opener of a three-game series.
