WSU Announces 2009 Nonconference Football Schedule

Jan. 5, 2009

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State Cougar football team will play Hawaii, Southern Methodist and Notre Dame during its 2009 nonconference schedule, WSU Director of Athletics Jim Sterk announced Monday. The Cougars' entire 12-game schedule has not been finalized pending approval by the Pacific-10 Conference but is expected to be released in the near future.

"I think this is a very challenging nonconference schedule with three highly-regarded opponents to go along with a difficult conference slate," said Sterk.

WSU opens its nonconference schedule Sept. 12 when it faces Hawaii in the Cougar Gridiron Classic presented by Washington's Beef Producers at Qwest Field in Seattle. The following week the Cougars will host Southern Methodist in Pullman, the first meeting against the Mustangs.

The Cougars' final nonconference contest comes against Notre Dame in a Halloween night affair, Oct. 31, in San Antonio, Texas. It marks just the second meeting between the two schools, with the first coming during the 2003 season.

"Our nonconference schedule provides excellent TV exposure as well as a highly desirable travel destination in San Antonio," said Sterk.

The complete 2009 football schedule for Washington State is expected to be released this month.
