David Walkosky Named WSU Cornerbacks Coach

June 8, 2007

PULLMAN, Wash. - David Walkosky, who spent the last eight years on the University of Toledo football staff, has been named cornerbacks coach at Washington State University, WSU Head Coach Bill Doba announced today. Walkosky replaces Kenny Greene, who resigned last month.

"Dave is an excellent football coach," said Doba. "He fits our needs perfectly as we needed an emphasis on special teams and he has a passion for special teams. During his interview Dave met with the staff and gave us his thoughts, ideas and teaching progression for special teams and corner play. He was impressive."

Walkosky completed his second season as the secondary coach in 2006 and also has served as the special teams coordinator since 2003. During his nine seasons at Toledo, the Rockets produced eight winning seasons, appeared in four bowl games, won two Mid-American Conference Championships and six MAC West Division titles.

Last season, Toledo's secondary intercepted 11 passes, returning three for touchdowns. In 2006 Toledo's defense ranked No. 1 in the MAC in both scoring (21.8) and total defense (316.8), while strong safety Keon Jackson made first-team All-MAC. Both Jackson and cornerback Antonio Malone signed free agent contracts with NFL teams following the season. Walkosky's special teams units have also been a key part of UT's success. In 2003, the Rockets finished third in the nation in punt returns (16.1 yards/return), and fifth in net punting (42.9). Walkosky has been responsible for the punt returns unit since 1999 and in that time the Rockets have blocked 16 kicks.

Prior to Toledo, Walkosky spent two seasons at Tennessee-Martin (1997-98), the first as special teams coordinator and running backs coach following by one year as the team's defensive coordinator.

A native of Steubenville, OH, Walkosky began his college career at Toledo as a walk-on, eventually earning a scholarship and a starting position at free safety his junior season. As a senior in 1990, Walkosky was the second-leading tackler on a UT squad that was MAC co-champion.

Walkosky earned his bachelor's degree in health education and physical education from Toledo in 1992, and earned his master's degree in athletic administration from the University of Memphis in 1994. He is married to Wendy Batchelor, a PhD. graduate of the University of Toledo.

Greene joined the Cougar staff after three seasons at Purdue University and six years at Fresno State. During the past four seasons he has coached three Pacific-10 conference first team selections while five players from WSU's secondary in that time are currently playing in the NFL.

"We are losing a good coach in Kenny Greene and we wish him nothing but the best," said Doba.

Greene starred for WSU in the mid-1970's, playing with, among others, Jack Thompson, Dan Doornink, Don Hover, Don Schwartz and Levenseller. After earning All-America first team honors in 1977, Greene was drafted in the first round of the NFL draft by St. Louis. He was the 19th player taken in the opening round. That spring eight members of the 1977 Cougar team were drafted by NFL clubs.
