Cougars Face Beavers For First Time Since 1996
Oct. 26, 1999 PULLMAN, Wash. - Saturday marks the resumption of one of WSU's oldest
rivalries...the Cougars and Beavers first squared off on the gridiron in
1903 and since then WSU has won 44, OSU 37, with three ties...the two teams
have not met since 1996...the Cougars have had the upper hand in recent
years, winning 15 of the last 17 games...OSU's lone win since 1978 is a
21-7 victory in 1994, while the 1982 game ended in a 14-14 tie...the
Beavers last won in Pullman in 1978, 32-31.
ERICKSON'S PALOUSE HOMECOMING: Oregon State head coach Dennis Erickson will
have a homecoming of sorts this weekend when he returns to the
Palouse...the Montana State graduate spent five years directing the Idaho
Vandal program, 1982-85, (32-15-0) and later was WSU's head coach, 1987-88
(12-10-1)...Erickson also spent one year at Wyoming, 1986 (6-6), and six
seasons at Miami, 1989-94 (63-9-0), where he won a pair of national titles
(1989, 1991)...he also was head coach of the NFL's Seattle Seahawks, 1995-98.
WHO: WSU Cougars (2-5, 1-3) vs. Oregon State Beavers (4-3, 1-3)
THE COACHES: WSU - Mike Price (Puget Sound '69) has a 58-62-0 (.483)
record at WSU in 11 years and a career mark of 104-106-0 (.495) in 19
seasons at Weber State (1981-88, 46-44-0) and WSU (1989-present). OSU - The
Beavers are coached by Dennis Erickson, in his first season at
OSU...Erickson has a 117-43-1 career record in 14 seasons, including stints
at Idaho, Wyoming, Washington State and Miami...Erickson is 0-1 against the
Cougars
WSU ON TV: The Cougars are currently slated for three live TV games during
the Pac-10 season...WSU's next TV appearance will be Nov. 6 at Oregon, with
FOX Sports Net on hand to telecast the 7:00 p.m. contest...the following
week ABC ventures to Pullman to televise the Cougar's match-up with the USC
Trojans...early in the season the WSU-Stanford game was shown by FOX
Sports Net.
FOX SPORTS NORTHWEST TV: Fox Sports Northwest will show the WSU-OSU game
Sunday, Oct. 31, at 1:30 p.m...Bud Nameck calls the action with Clete Casper.

running backs through seven games with 113 carries for 624 yards and a 5.5
average...he also has caught 11 passes for 107 yards...Burnett has improved
his rushing totals every game through seven games...in the last five games
he has averaged 107.4 ypg and in the last three games 116.7 ypg...his
game-by game performances:
BURNETT ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Deon Burnett may have started the season slow,
but the true freshman has been hot of late and is on his way to the best
season ever for a Cougar freshman running back...among his accomplishments:
HACKETT HAS 89 CAREER CATCHES: In just 17 games as a Cougar, Leaford
Hackett has 89 career receptions, leaving him just 18 catches short of
WSU's career Top 10...only three Cougar receivers have ever accumulated 100
total passes in consecutive seasons...Hugh Campbell, WSU's career record
holder with 176 receptions, had consecutive seasons of 66-53-57...current
assistant coach Mike Levenseller had back-to-back seasons of 67 and 43
receptions, while Timm Stallworth had seasons of 51 and 63...Hackett led
WSU receivers last year with 54 catches...his receptions have accounted for
1,027 yards, an average of 12.1 per catch.
TAYLOR ON CAREER LISTS: Senior Nian Taylor, with five catches for 41 yards
against ASU, has moved into seventh on WSU's career reception list...Taylor
now has 121 career receptions for 2,236 yards...Taylor is ranked third in
career reception yards...just ahead of Taylor on the reception list are Tim
Stallworth 125, C. J. Davis 128 and Doug Flansburg 140...ahead of Taylor on
the reception yardage list are Hugh Campbell 2,452 and Tim Stallworth 2,250.
BURNETT EYES TD RECORD: With 10 touchdowns through seven games this
season, running back Deon Burnett has his sights set on the WSU
single-season record of 17 (13 rush, 4 rec.) by Steve Broussard in 1989...he
needs one more TD to enter the WSU single-season top 10...next up are seven
players with 11 touchdowns each. Burnett also has a shot at Broussard's
single-season scoring record of 104 points (17 TD, 1 2XP) with 60 points
through seven games the Upland, Calif., native is only three rushing TDs
shy of entering the Pac-10 single-season top 20. Here's a look at WSU's top
10 single-season touchdown scorers:
LINDELL FOURTH IN CAREER SCORING: Rian Lindell, with 175 career points,
now ranks fourth in career scoring at WSU...he has made 103-of-106 extra
point kicks and 24-of-40 (60%) of his field goals, including 4-of-6 this
year...the top three career scorers are Jason Hanson 328, Steve Broussard
248 and John Traut 231.
INJURIES: WSU's injury report for Monday, Oct. 25, from the training staff:
Phil Locker (hip flexor, probable), Alvin Arzu (knee, questionable). Curtis
Holden (knee, doubtful), Raonall Smith (knee, doubtful), Lamont Thompson
(neck, questionable), Tomasi Kongaika (leg bruise, questionable), Torry
Hollimon (concussion, probable), Wendell Smith (ankle, questionable), Erik
Larsen (hamstring, questionable), Brad Philley (hamstring, doubtful), Ing
Aleaga (neck, questionable), Earl Riley (toe, probable), Jesse Ratcliff
(back, probable). Out indefinitely: Joe Gecas (ankle), Isaac Brown (hand),
Milton Wynn (broken finger), Adam Davis (hip), Virgil Williams (right
shoulder nerve bruise), Jason Gesser (broken hand), Alex Tinsley
(hamstring), Mark Hedeen (neck).
BURNETT SET ONE-GAME RECORD: Freshman Deon Burnett has set the school
rushing record in each of WSU's last four games...his 136 yards rushing at
ASU is the most ever by a freshman running back, just as was his 110 yards
against Louisiana-Lafayette and his 104 yards against California...Will
Haskell is the only other freshman running back at WSU to have gone over
100 yards (100 against Oregon State, 1993.
SCHEDULING: Coaches often talk about whom an upcoming opponent faces the
week before or the week after the two teams collide...here's a look at WSU
opponents and whom they play before and after meeting the Cougars:
COUG FOOTBALL HAS THREE SETS OF TWINS: WSU's football roster this fall
includes three sets of identical twins...they are offensive linemen Reed
and Ryan Raymond (Moses Lake, Wash., born 10/23/77) and Blake and Matt
Klingeman (Othello, Wash., born 12/29/80)...the third set of twins are
Brandon and Ryan Pickering (Monroe, Wash., born 3/31/77)...the Raymonds and
Pickerings are redshirt juniors, the Klingemans first year freshmen.
MORE BROTHERS: In addition to three sets of twins on the Cougar football
roster, there are five other sets of brothers...they are Fred and Josh
Shavies, Torry and Trent Hollimon, Pat and Collin Henderson, Austin and
Taylor Matson and Raonall and Kealan Smith.
WSU-WASHINGTON CONNECTION: Three members of WSU's football roster have
brothers who have or are playing at Washington...Cougar Ing Aleaga's
brother Ink was a standout 1994-95-96, while Russell Mizin's brother is a
senior this season...in addition Torry Hollimon's brother Trent played at
Washington 1994-95...Jesse Nicassio, a freshman with the Cougars this
season, has a brother, Josh, who is at ASU...both are placekickers.
LINDELL BACK ON TRACK: Ryan Lindell has snapped out of his slump of a year
ago...he has hit four of his six field goal attempts this year, a 27-yarder
against Stanford, a 48-yarder against Idaho, a 52-yarder against Arizona
and a 40-yarder against California...his only misses have been a 52-yard
attempt at Stanford and a blocked kick at ASU...Lindell is 103-of-106 in
career extra points and is working on a streak of 40 straight...his last
missed PAT was on WSU's second touchdown of the 1998 Rose Bowl when his
effort was blocked...he has now made 24-of-39 career field goals...last
year Rian Lindell booted four field goals at Boise State to tie the WSU
one-game record...he made seven straight to close out the 1997 season and
seven straight early in 1998 during a 14-for-15 string of successful
kicks...then, over the final seven games of 1998, he made just one of nine
attempts, a 34-yarder against UCLA...in an attempt to break out of a
seven-game slump, Rian Lindell reported to camp 10 pounds lighter than last
year, weighing in at 231 pounds and the result has been a much more
accurate kicker for the Cougs.
INTERCEPTIONS DOWN FOR WSU: WSU quarterbacks have thrown just four
interceptions this season and one of those was a last-play heave...a year
ago the Cougar passers ended the season with 25 interceptions, six of which
were returned for touchdowns...through six games, only one of the three
picks (at Stanford) this year resulted in an opponent touchdown.
MOST STARTS: Several Cougars who will take the field this week are entering
their second season as a starter for WSU, including:
Rian Lindell - 30 consecutive starts [30 total]
GLEASON HAS 261 TACKLES: Senior linebacker Steve Gleason has moved into
11th on WSU's career tackle list with 261 stops, leaving him just 18 short
of the Top 10...the current team leader has 77 stops in seven games this
season to lead all Pac-10 players...with 11 tackles against ASU, Gleason
passed Brian Flones 253, Tuineau Alipate 257 and James Darling
258...Gleason entered his final football season with a team-leading 184
tackles...Gleason's 100 tackles as a sophomore led WSU and last season he
was in on 70 tackles.
BIRNBAUM'S EFFICIENT: After struggling as a junior, Steve Birnbaum has
proved an efficient quarterback this season...last year he threw 11
interceptions and had an efficiency rating of 107.52...this year his rating
is 128.16 and he has thrown just two interceptions, one in the first
quarter at Stanford and the second against Louisiana-Lafayette...in between
he threw 113 passes without an interception...Birnbaum is now tenth on
WSU's career passing list with 3,148 yards...last week he passed Dave
Mathieson, who has 3,094 yards (1961-63)...ahead of him are (9th) Bob
Newman, 3,172 (1956-58) and (8 ) Jerry Henderson, 3,411 (1966-68):
COUGS SCORE OFTEN: Since 1980 WSU has averaged more than three touchdowns
a game, currently boasting an average of 25.4 points per outing...the
following is a breakdown of WSU scoring by season since 1980:
SCORING STREAKS: WSU currently has three significant scoring streaks on
the line:
COUGS STINGY IN FIRST QUARTER: WSU's defense has allowed 317 first quarter
points in the last 75 games (4.23/quarter) over the past seven years...WSU
allowed 41 first-quarter points in 1993, 29 in 1994, 45 in 1995, 43 in
1996, 48 in 1997, 87 in 1998 and 30 so far in 1999.
THOMPSON SECOND IN CAREER PICKS: Junior Lamont Thompson has picked off one
pass each against Utah, Idaho and ASU this year to push his career total to
13 in three seasons...with the interception against ASU, Thompson moved
into a tie for second on WSU's all-time list...he is one behind record
holder Richard Reed, 1966-68, who had 14 in three years.
NOTHING LIKE HOME: The Washington State Cougars love to play at home and
after looking at the team's home and away records during Mike Price's
11-year tenure, it's easy to see why...Price at home has a 34-23 record,
including a 28-14 mark the past eight years...on the road, WSU is
24-39...WSU's 6-0 home record in 1997 is the best ever for the Cougars, who
previously had never won six home games in one year:
COUGARS VS. RANKED TEAMS: The Cougars have yet to meet a ranked team in
1999...in 1998 WSU lost to No. 4 UCLA, No. 15 Oregon and No. 10
Arizona...in 1997 WSU defeated No. 22 USC and lost to 21st ranked
ASU...unranked at the start of the season when WSU won, UCLA finished the
year ranked seventh...in the final game of the year, WSU lost to
co-national champion Michigan...in 1996 WSU lost at No. 5 Colorado,
defeated No. 25 Oregon and No. 19 California and lost to No. 12
Washington...WSU, in 1995, suffered losses to three nationally ranked
teams: No. 2 Nebraska, at No. 5 USC and at No. 12 Oregon.
RED ZONE: Washington State in 1999 has scored 17 times (16 TDs) in 17
trips inside the 20 yard line, while opponents have scored 16 times (14
TDs) in 26 trips inside WSU's 20 yard line...the Cougars have scored six
touchdowns in six tries inside the five yard line this year...1998 scored
17 times (10 TDs) in 28 trips into the Red Zone (60.7%), while opponents
converted 34 times (30 TDs) in 42 Red Zone entries...in 1997 the Cougs
scored 49 times (39 TDs) in 55 Red Zone entries (89.1%), while WSU
opponents converted 23 times (20 TDs) in 32 tries.
TURNOVERS: After turning the ball over nine times in the first two games,
WSU has had just three in the last five games...WSU is now even in turnover
margin this year...last year the Cougars lost the ball 40 times, the most
among Division I football teams...WSU's turnover margin was -17 in 1998,
-1 in 1997, -9 in 1996, 0 in 1995, +9 in 1994.
RUSHING TOTALS UNDER 100: In the last seven years WSU has held 31 of 75
opponents to less than 100 yards rushing...the lows include Montana State's
-35 and Pacific's -6 in 1993 and Montana's -6 in 1995...in those 75 games,
WSU has held opponents to 50 or less yards 12 times:
1993 - Games WSU Allowed 100 Yards Rushing - 3/11
1994 - Games WSU Allowed 100 Yards Rushing - 3/12
1995 - Games WSU Allowed 100 Yards Rushing - 5/11
1996 - Games WSU Allowed 100 Yards Rushing - 10/11
1997 - Games WSU Allowed 100 Yards Rushing - 8/12
1998 - Games WSU Allowed 100 Yards Rushing - 9/11
1999 - Games WSU Allowed 100 Yards Rushing - 6/7
WSU DEFENSE HALTS LONG RUSHES: WSU's defense allowed three runs of 20+
yards in 1999...in the last seven years WSU has allowed just 62 runs of 20
yards or longer in 75 games:
1993 Plays Allowed 20 Yards or Longer - 8
Anderson, Utah - 40, Dean, Idaho - 23
1994 Plays Allowed 10-19 Yards - 15
WSU SECOND IN PAC-10 DEFENSE: Since 1992 WSU has been in the top half of
the conference in defense all but once (1992)...the Cougs won the defensive
title in 1994, allowing 229 yards a game, the best average in the league
since 1982 and the second best since 1971...in 1993 and 1997 WSU's defense
was ranked second in the Pac-10...here's how the Pac-10 defenses rank,
1992-98:
WASHINGTON STATE SINCE '92: The Washington State Cougars have won 45
games since the start of the 1992 season...here's a look at the records for
Pac-10 teams, 1992-99:
100-YARD RUSHERS FEW: Only 24 running backs have been able to crack the
100-yard mark in the last seven years and 75 games against WSU's
defense...UCLA's Skip Hicks is the only back to have done so in
back-to-back seasons and the Bruins are the only team to have a back go
over 100 yards in three straight seasons, 1995-96-97:
1993 - Players Gaining 100+ Yards vs. WSU - 2
1994 - Players Gaining 100+ Yards vs. WSU - 1
1995 - Players Gaining 100+ Yards vs. WSU - 5
1996 - Players Gaining 100+ Yards vs. WSU - 2
1997 - Players Gaining 100+ Yards vs. WSU - 4
1998 - Players Gaining 100+ Yards vs. WSU - 5
1999 - Players Gaining 100+ Yards vs. WSU - 5
COUGAR ATTENDANCE: WSU recorded a record 208,002 attendance in 1998, an
average of 34,667 per game (6 games)...WSU's previous high was 199,678 for
six games in 1997...the 1998 average fell just short of the 1994 record
average of 34,719 (5 games).
COUG'S LINE BIG: The collective weight of this year's offensive line is
1,489 pounds, just 19 pounds shy of last year's record 1,508 pounds...Reed
Raymond tipped the scales this fall at 316 and Ryan Tujague is 305...the
babies on the line are guard Mike Schwarz at 295, tackle Phil Locker at
288, center Lincoln Walden-Schulz at 285...when Reed Raymond, 313, plays,
the total is 1,507.
WSU SEASON TICKETS: WSU has a first-ever seven games in Martin Stadium
this fall...six are official WSU home games and the seventh is this year's
Battle of the Palouse with nearby Idaho...the Vandals are playing their
four home games in WSU's facility this season to meet the NCAA attendance
requirements (average for one season)...this year's WSU-Idaho game is
officially an Idaho home game, but WSU will stage the contest as though it
is a home game...all seven Martin Stadium games are included in WSU's $119
season ticket package...a seven-game family package (2 adults, 2 children)
to WSU games is $175...single game reserve tickets are $18 for adults, $10
for general admission and $5 for children...WSU tickets are available by
calling 1-800-GOCOUGS.
PASSING ATTACK CATCHING: It seems like just about everyone has joined the
receiving corps in 1999...no less than 15 different receivers have collected
at least one pass so far this season...11 of those 15 players recorded their
first career catches for WSU...Leaford Hackett leads the group with an
impressive 5.8 catches per game...Nian Taylor averages 4.6 per outing,
followed by Farwan Zubedi (2.3) and Marcus Williams (2.1)...those players
making their first career catches include: Williams (Utah), Milton Wynn
(Utah), Corey Scott (Utah), Paul Mencke (Utah), RB Deon Burnett (Utah),
Collin Henderson (Stanford), RB Jeremy Theilbahr (Arizona), Russell Mizen
(Cal), RB Brad Philley (Cal), DeAndre Douglas (Louisiana-Lafayette) and
Markus Torian (Louisiana-Lafayette)...the next to join this list? Don't be
surprised if it's TE Josh Shavies or QB Steve Birnbaum...the
Lousiana-Lafayette game marked the fourth time this season that at least
eight different players had at least one reception in the same game...a
season-high nine Cougars had catches versus the Ragin' Cajuns, while eight
players caught passes against Utah, Stanford and Cal.
FEELING LIKE '52: The Cougars are hoping to duplicate the success of the
1952 team which, like the 1999 squad, also started 0-4...but that Al
Kircher-coached team rallied to win four of its last six games and finished
4-6...the 1952 team posted wins over Oregon and Oregon State, among
others...WSU had been 0-4 only three times previously before this season:
1938, 1952 and 1967.
BURNET AFTER PAC-10 RECORD: Freshman Deon Burnett is chasing the Pac-10
freshman rushing record held by UCLA's Sharmon Shaw (who later changed his
name to Karim Abdul-Jabbar) with 1,227 yards in 1994...Burnett has 624
yards through seven games, but has been averaging over 100 yards per game
for the last five games...WSU has five games left in a 12-game season.
WSU ON THE ROAD AT HOME: In years to come it may be a trivia question -
When did the Cougars play on the road at home?...Sept. 18 Idaho was
officially the home team and the Cougars were the visiting team, complete
with white uniforms...Idaho this year is using WSU's Martin Stadium as
their home field in an effort to qualify for NCAA D-I status...the Vandal's
Kibbie Dome is not large enough to allow Idaho to meet the average needed
for D-I status, so they have moved their four home games to WSU's stadium
for the 1999 season.
WSU ADDS 12th GAME FOR 1999: The Washington State Cougars will have a
chance to play a school-record 13 games in 1999 with the addition of Hawaii
to the schedule...WSU and Hawaii have not met in football since 1929...they
also played in 1925...Hawaii won the first match-up, WSU the second...the
addition of the game in Honolulu gives WSU 12 games, with a chance at a
bowl game...teams with a 12-game schedule must win seven to qualify for a
post-season bowl
BASEBALL AND THE COUGS: Steve Gleason and Brad Philley have been members
of WSU's baseball team in recent years and Grady Emmerson almost was a
member of the squad...Emmerson tried to hook up with the baseball coaches
when he was a freshman, but after missing head coach Steve Farrington
several times while walking past his office, Emmerson decided to stop at
the football office...five years later he is a starting linebacker and the
Cougar coaches think he stopped at the right office...Gleason finished his
four years of baseball last spring and Philley has one more diamond season
of eligibility...all three were linebackers last year, but Philley has
since moved to running back...the latest Cougar football player to join the
WSU baseball team will be true freshman Collin Henderson.
GLEASON, EMERSON PAC-10 ACADEMIC PICKS: WSU linebackers Steve Gleason and
Grady Emmerson were named to the 1998 Pacific-10 Conference academic first
team...Gleason has a 3.15 grade point average in management and information
systems, while Emmerson has a 3.33 GPA in math education...both are
juniors...three other Cougars received honorable mention recognition,
quarterback Steve Birnbaum, defensive end/linebacker Serign Marong and
offensive guard Mike Sage.
PRICE THIRD IN WINS: WSU coach Mike Price is third among the current
Pacific-10 coaches with 104 wins...Arizona's Dick Tomey has 151, followed
by ASU's Bruce Snyder, 116...Price, in his 11th year at WSU, is second in
consecutive years at the same school...Tomey is in his 13th at Arizona.
MIKE PRICE AMONG WSU'S BEST: Only one Washington State football coach with
tenure of five years or longer at WSU put together a better record than
Mike Price...Price, in his 11 seasons at WSU, is 58-62-0 (.483), while his
career mark is now 104-106-0...Babe Hollingbery was 93-53-14 (.625) during
his 1926-42 (17 years) tenure...Price's record is the best at WSU in the
last 50 years for coaches with a tenure of three or more years...Price's 56
wins at WSU ranks second to Hollingbery's 93...Jim Walden is third on the
victory list at 44.

NATIONAL LEADERS
GAME 1: WSU's losing streak was pushed to nine games with a 27-7 loss
to visiting Utah...the Utes scored a field goal in each of the first two
quarters, two touchdowns in the third quarter and one additional TD in the
final quarter...WSU's only score came with nine minutes to play in the game
when Deon Burnett went one yard to complete an 80-yard drive under the
control of Jason Gesser...Gesser, who took over at QB late in the third
quarter, directed the scoring drive...starting QB Steve Birnbaum was the
victim of four fumbles, all lost...Birnbaum hit 12 of 21 passes for 150
yards and Gesser was 10 of 18 for 75 yards...Deon Burnett carried nine
times for 35 yards as WSU rushed for just 98 yards...safety Billy Newman
made 12 tackles, Curtis Holden and Lamont Thompson 11 each and Steve
Gleason 10...Thompson and Earl Riley each had interceptions.
GAME 2: WSU mistakes led to 40 Stanford points in a 54-17 loss at
Stanford...the loss pushed WSU's losing streak to 10 straight, including
nine in league play...WSU's generosity included the loss of three fumbles
that led to touchdowns, an interception return for a touchdown, a safety, a
blocked punt for a touchdown and a missed field goal that produced a
three-pointer for Stanford...senior Leaford Hackett had a super night for
WSU, catching 10 passes for 103 yards, returning three punts for 25 yars
and five kickoffs for 93 yards...freshman Deon Burnett's 52 net rushing
yards paced the Cougars, as did Steve Birnbaum's 14-for-20 passing
performance for 144 yards...he threw one interception and tossed TD passes
to Hackett and Corey Scott...Curtis Holden's 15 tackles and one
interception and 12 tackles by Steve Gleason led WSU's defense.
GAME 3: The Cougars forged a two-touchdown lead, then let it slip away
in a 28-17 loss to Idaho in the annual Battle of the Palouse...it was
Idaho's first win over WSU since 1965 and snapped WSU's 14-game win streak
over the Vandals...the loss was WSU's school record equaling 11
straight...the Cougs had 181 yards of offense in the first quarter and led
14-0 at the end of the first period...in the second quarter WSU managed
just 25 yards of offense, but held the lead into the third
quarter...Idaho's first score was on a sack of Steve Burnbaum that led to a
62-yard TD return...after Idaho tied the game 14-14, Rian Lindell banged
home a 48-yard field goal for a 17-14 WSU lead, but the Vandal offense
rolled into the fourth quarter and scored twice more...freshman Deon
Burnett got his first start for the Cougs and responded with 91 rushing
yards...WSU passed for 295 yards, hitting 23 of 53 passes...Leaford Hackett
caught eight passes for 99 yards and Marcus Williams caught his first WSU
TD pass, 19 yards from Steve Birnbaum...WSU had just one turnover, the
costly sack fumble that was returned for Idaho's first score...Lamont
Thompson had the 12th interception of his career for WSU.
GAME 4: Arizona scored a controversial touchdown on the last play of
the game to pull out a 30-24 Wildcat win over WSU, stretching the Cougar
losing streak to a team record 12 games...the Wildcats broke a 24-24 tie
with no time left when Keith Smith passed 42 yards to Bobby Wade, who made
the grab in one corner of the endzone while lying on the ground...TV
replays showed, however, he actually scooped the ball off the turf...still,
the Cougars had chances to win and came up short...twice in the second half
WSU battled back from deficits, first 17-10 and then 24-17...freshman Deon
Burnett scored a pair of WSU touchdowns, the first on a 2-yard run that
tied the game at 17-17, then on a 55-yarder that produced a 24-24 deadlock
late in the fourth quarter...Farwan Zubedi scored WSU's first touchdown on
an 11-yard pass from Steve Birnbaum in the second quarter, while Rian
Lindell tallied WSU's other score on a wind-aided 52-yard field goal just
before halftime that gave the Cougars a 10-7 lead at
intermission...Birnbaum hit 12 of 19 passes for 112 yards before leaving
the game after falling on a Burnett fumble in the end zone for a Wildcat
safety in third quarter...Birnbaum, who pulled a groin muscle on the play,
was replaced by Jason Gesser, who engineered WSU's two fourth quarter
scoring drives...Gesser was also hurt in the game (sprained thumb), but was
able to finish...Burnett ended the day with 96 net yards rushing, while
Leaford Hackett caught seven passes for 97 yards...Steve Gleason led WSU's
defense with a career high 16 tackles, while Billy Newman and Raonall Smith
had 15 tackles each.
GAME 5: The celebrations lasted into the night after the Cougars snapped
a 12-game skid with a 31-7 Homecoming win over California...the heroes for
WSU included Steve Birnbaum, who completed 23 of 38 passes for 227 yards,
two scores and no interceptions...Nian Taylor led the injury-riddled
receiving corps with nine receptions covering 77 yards, while freshman
Collin Henderson and junior Marcus Williams each hauled in scoring
passes...freshman Deon Burnett gained 104 yards rushing with 25 carries,
both career highs...LeJuan Gibbons grabbed his first interception in two
years and Steve Gleason's nine tackles led the defense...WSU scored 17
second quarter points and added 14 in the final period...Cal's only answer
was a 25-yard fumble return in the third quarter...after surrendering 91
yards to California in the first quarter, WSU's defense took charge and
held the Bears to -7 yards in the second quarter and just 30 in the third
quarter, a combined 23 yards in two quarters...Cal's rushing game netted
just 58 yards and the passing attack 116 yards, a total of 174 yards...it
was WSU's best defensive performance since 1997 when USL gained 152 yards
and Boise State 115...in addition, it was WSU's best defense against a
Pac-10 opponent since Oregon was limited to 97 yards in 1994.
GAME 6: WSU picked up its first shutout since 1997 with a 44-0 win over
visiting Louisiana-Lafayette and in the process stretched the defense's
streak to eight quarters without allowing a touchdown...true freshman Deon
Burnett proved to be the wrecking ball that demolished ULL, scoring four
times and gaining 110 yards rushing...his effort boosted his season rushing
total to 488 yards and his touchdowns scored to nine, both WSU freshman
records...the Cougars scored twice in both the first and second quarters
for a 28-0 halftime lead and yet had the ball for just 20 plays and 6:58 in
the opening 30 minutes...WSU's defense came up with big plays whenever ULL
drove into WSU's end of the field...included in the big defensive stops
were Grady Emmerson's first career interception, a forced fumble on fourth
down that prevented a first down, a missed 32-yard field goal, a fumble
recovery by Rob Meier, and an interception by Marcus Trufant...Steve
Gleason made 13 tackles to lead WSU...nine receivers caught passes from
Steve Birnbaum and backup Paul Mencke, who played just over a quarter of
the game...Nian Taylor caught three passes for 101 yards to lead WSU
receivers...all of his catches came in the first quarter, including a
59-yard scoring strike from Birnbaum, who hit 11 of his 19 passes...he
threw two TD passes and was intercepted once...Birnbaum had thrown 113
straight passes without an interception since the first quarter of the
Stanford game.
GAME 7: The Cougars let a halftime lead slip away for the second time
this season, falling 33-21 at ASU...WSU jumped out to a 14-0 lead on Deon
Burnett's 11-yard run and Leaford Hackett's 11-yard reception from Steve
Birnbuam, then added a one-yard Birnbaum run in the second quarter for a
21-13 halftime lead...in the first half WSU ran 45 plays for 259 yards, but
in the second half the Cougars mustered just 20 plays for 32
yards...meanwhile ASU ran off 49 second-half plays for 257 yards and 20
points...Burnett had 97 yards at halftime, 96 after three quarters, then
finished with a career-high 136 yards...Birnbaum was 13-of-21 at halftime
for 126 yards, while in the third and fourth quarters he was a combined
2-for-8 for 15 yards...Leaford Hackett and Nian Taylor each caught five
passes...Kareem Anderson saved his best performance of the year for his
hometown crowd, booming seven punts for a 48.0 average, including a
69-yarder...defensively Lamont Thompson picked off the 13th pass of his
career, leaving him one short of the school record...Steve Gleason and
Torry Hollimon paced WSU on defense, each recording 11 tackles...Rob Meier
was next with nine stops, including three tackles-for-loss, one of them a
sack...LeJuan Gibbons continued his solid play by forcing one fumble and
deflecting two passes.
