Sanders Advances at US Amateur

Aug. 20, 2008

PINEHURST, N.C. - Washington State University men's golf incoming freshman Trent Sanders advanced to match-play competition at the 108th U.S. Amateur at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club.

Trent, a native of Scottsdale, Ariz., shot 72-72 in the stroke play rounds of the USGA event, advancing to today's match-play portion. Of the 315 qualifiers to the U.S. Amateur, only 64 moved on to match play.

"I'm so proud of Trent," WSU Head Coach Walt Williams said. "I've been coaching Division I teams for 16 years and he's the first player I've ever had make it to the match play rounds of the U.S. Amateur."

Trent was defeated in the Round of 64 three and two by Nick Taylor of Canada.

Sanders, a four-year letterwinner and scholar-athlete from Brophy College Prep, will play with WSU next season. Sanders finished his senior year as the Desert Valley regional champion, earning first-team all-region honors and finishing third in the super region tournament. He finished second at the 5A state tournament, earning first-team all-state.
