Cougar Rowing Finishes Second, Fifth in NightSprint Grand Final

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Washington State University women's rowing team capped off the first day of the 2008 Head of the Oklahoma with two top-five finishes in the women's collegiate NightSprint Grand Final Saturday night at the Oklahoma River.
"We had a good go of it today," Washington State Head Coach Jane LaRiviere said. "It's early, we have a few things to work on, but it was great to get out there and race. I'm looking forward to tomorrow."
WSU's A crew placed second in the final with a time of 1:35.540, bettering its third-place mark in the qualifying race earlier in the day. The crew consisted of Erica Lewis (bow), Kyann Martin, Natasha Ostopovich, Phillippa Summerville, Sarah Powell, Justine Galbraith, Karin Brevick, Irena Neffeova and Corina Chilibeck (cox).
The Cougar's B boat also bettered its finish in the grand final, coming in fifth place in the race with a time of 1:42.380. The B crew placed sixth in the qualifying race.
Stanford's A crew, which qualified first during the afternoon round, won the sprint with a time of 1:33.380. Radcliffe (third, 1:37.700), Miami (fourth, 1:40.390) and Southern Methodist University (sixth, 1:43.040) rounded out the top six.
Earlier in the day the Cougars placed three of their four crews in the top four of the women's open four event. WSU's A crew took first, followed by WSU D in second and WSU B in fourth. The WSU C squad placed eighth
in the 32-boat race.
Washington State concludes racing at the Head of the Oklahoma Sunday as four pairs compete in the women's open pairs competition at 8:45 a.m. CT and two crews race in the women's collegiate four at 12:10 p.m. CT.
