WSU Defeats Gonzaga for Second Straight Week

Oct. 31, 2008

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State University women's rowing team hosted a windy and rainy Head of the Snake Friday, winning four of its six races against the Gonzaga Bulldogs for the second straight week.

Throughout the first couple of flights a strong headwind worked against both teams, until they made the turn in the last 1,000 meters of the 5,000 meter course to stroke for the finish line. A thick rain passed through, but the wind died and the boats benefited from smoother water.

Leading off the regatta, the Cougar varsity eight boat earned the top time of the day, 20:29.01, defeating the Bulldogs for the second week in a row, this time by a 26 second margin.

The second and third varsity eight boats also claimed victory, finishing with times of 21:13.85, and 20:56.29 respectively.

The Bulldogs earned victories in the novice eight and second novice eight races, but the Cougar boats gained ground from last week. The novice eight boat finished with a time of 24:12.51, just 55 seconds behind Gonzaga, and the second novice eight boat finished with a time of 26:38.55.

"The novices had a very good second race, they learned a lot from last week," Washington State head coach Jane LaRiviere said.

The third novice eight boat won its race by more than two minutes, finishing with a time of 23:47.40.

Washington State will now look forward to the culmination of their fall season, as they travel to Seattle to compete in the Head of the Lake Regatta, hosted by cross-state rival Washington, Sunday, Nov. 9.
