WSU Rowing Completes Successful Food Drive

May 14, 2008

PULLMAN, Wash. - Thirty-five members of the Washington State University women's rowing team took part in the Letter Carriers Union's `Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive' Saturday, May 10 at both Safeway and Dissmore's IGA grocery stores in Pullman.

The total amount collected by the Cougar rowers came to 1,926 pounds which was combined with the Pullman Post Office's collection for a grand total of 6,316 pounds. The group in Pullman collected the most food in Whitman County which accumulated a total of 7,478 pounds. All donated food was taken to the Whitman County Food Bank.

"Our annual food drive is one of the activities that our team looks forward to every year," WSU women's rowing captain Michelle Mindemann said. "The whole team was excited to do it and pleased with the success."

On top of helping the fight against hunger and assisting the local Letter Carriers Union, the WSU rowers were also able to connect with members of the community.

"Among other reasons, I enjoyed it it because it gave our team a good opportunity to interact with the community and show who we are," Mindemann said. "Throughout the day we were given so much support for the food drive and our season in general. The countless `Go Cougs' and `Good Lucks' during our time on the store fronts definitely added to the fun and put smiles on our faces."
