Oprea Earns Two Wins on Second Day of Jack Taylor Classic

Alexandra Oprea captured both of her matches to lead the Washington State Cougars women's tennis team during the second day of play at the 2008 Jack Taylor Classic Saturday, hosted by Boise State University at the Appleton Tennis Center.
"Our doubles play was much better and the entire team did a nice job of competing today," said WSU Head Coach Lisa Hart.
Oprea opened the day by teaming with Ekaterina Kamendova to earn an 8-5 win over New Mexico's Ola Abou-Zekry and Maria Sotirchos. In other doubles action New Mexico picked up two wins over the Cougars as Mackenzie White and Emma Hayman defeated Elisabeth Fournier and Aleksandra Cekic 8-4, while Anya Villenueva and Victoria Tessman narrowly defeated Jessica Gomez and Marina Nicolas 8-6. WSU senior Bianca Selaru and Boise State's Rocia Frej joined forces to defeat New Mexico's duo of Manumea Durie and Jessica Garfjord 8-2.
In singles action the Cougars captured three of seven singles matches against Utah. Oprea used a strong third set to defeat Erin Monson, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 while Fournier defeated Leigh Walsh 6-2, 6-3. Cekic earned the final Cougar singles win by cruising past Lexi Provancha 6-1, 6-1.
Anastasia Putilina needed three sets to get by Kamendova, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1, while Lisa Johnson earned a straight-set win over Gomez, 6-4, 6-2. Andrea Maughan needed a third-set tiebreak to defeat Nicolas, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2) and Kaine Bourdages defeated Selaru 6-3, 7-6 (7-1).
