Burduli Named Northwest Region Winner of Arthur Ashe Award

May 14, 2008

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University senior tennis player Ekaterina Burduli added to her impressive 2008 season by being named the 2008 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Northwest Region winner of the ITA/Arthur Ashe Jr. Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship, the association announced earlier this week.

"This is a great honor for Eka and one she richly deserves," said WSU Head Coach Lisa Hart. "Eka depicts all that is right with being a student-athlete; she is a great teammate and leader, and a wonderful representative of Washington State University."

The award goes to a student-athlete who has exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements. Burduli joins seven other regional recipients on the national ballot, with the national winner announced May 20.

Burduli enters next week's NCAA Singles Tournament looking to culminate one of the most storied tennis careers in school history. Earlier this season she moved past Erica Perkins into the top spot on WSU's all-time victories list and now stands at 91 for her career. Her 28 wins this season are the most in a single-season by any Cougar player and she is also the only player to record three consecutive 20-plus win seasons.

Last week Burduli led Washington State University to the 2008 NCAA Championships for the first time since the 2002 season, and just the fifth time in the school's history.
