PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State University women's volleyball coach, Cindy Fredrick, put rumors to rest Tuesday afternoon and said she will remain at the Pullman school.
"Purdue did call me several times and I was very honored by them pursuing both my husband and me, but after a lot of thought we decided we wanted to stay Cougars," Fredrick said. "Purdue made a very strong offer but it boiled down to my conversation with Jim Sterk (WSU Director of Athletics). It really did not come down to money. Jim really let us know that Washington State wants us to stay here and that was great to hear. Jim and I are working on enhancing some of the details of my contract."
Fredrick has accumulated a 269-172 (.610) record in her 14 seasons at Washington State including the 2002 season where the Cougars advanced to the NCAA Championships Tournament Elite Eight after finishing third in the Pacific-10 Conference. The Washington State volleyball team was ranked seventh in the final national rankings. While at WSU, Fredrick-coached volleyball teams have accumulated seven 20-win seasons and nine trips to the NCAA Championship Tournament. Fredrick is the most successful coach of a women's sport in WSU history.
Her overall collegiate record is 355-232 (.605) in 18 years as a collegiate head coach. Her husband, Dr. Mashallah Farokhmanesh, has been an assistant coach at WSU all 14 years and former Cougar standout, Jennifer Stinson Greeny, has served as an assistant coach for three years.
"It would take a lot to get us to leave Pullman, it is our home and we love it here," Fredrick said. "We were with our players Saturday night at the volleyball team banquet and these amazing young women are a huge reason why Farokh and I wanted to stay. We have had and will continue to have quality young women in the program. There's not a better place for us right now."
Fredrick's current contract at WSU runs through June 2007.
