Cougar Volleyball Announces Team Captains

Aug. 15, 2008

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Seniors Brittany Johnson and Emily Rooney, and junior Jackie Albright have been voted by their teammates to serve as the captains of the 2008 Washington State volleyball team, first-year head coach Andrew Palileo announced Friday.

Johnson is a three-year starter at outside hitter from Phoenix, Ariz., and the leading returning hitter for the Cougs. Rooney is a 6-foot, 1 inch middle blocker from Red Wing, Minn., who transferred from South Dakota State this season. Albright is a two-year starter at outside hitter from Lake Forest, Calif., and the second-leading returning hitter for WSU.

Palileo said he looked for his team captains to provide leadership including leading by example, be respected by their peers especially when holding teammates accountable, and to have the ability to make plays in tough situations.

"This is a good mixture," Palileo said. "In Brittany we have a captain who is a great leader and very vocal. With Jackie we have captain who is mellow and a good go-between the tough captain and the players. And then Emily is a captain who is really light-hearted, and kind of goofy in comparison to the other two."

The Cougars volleyball team opens the season against Cal State Northridge at the Boise State Bronco Invite, Friday, Aug. 29, and will play Seattle University and host Boise State Saturday, Aug. 30.

Today marks the beginning of the 2008 Cougar VolleyBlog on the Washington State Athletics official website, wsucougars.com. Fans can read updates on the WSU volleyball team as well as information about Cougar opponents and NCAA Division I volleyball nationally that is not included in the weekly releases.
