The history of cheerleading at Washington State University dates back to the 1910's when an all male "Rooter Team" cheered on the school then known as Washington State Agricultural College. Notable dates from this time period include the first homecoming held in 1913 and the introduction of the school fight song in 1919. More than 85 years later, the same fight song lyrics are sung by the cheerleaders at every home football game.

During the period of war in the 1930's and 40's, the all men's Rooter Team was replaced with female cheerleaders. The face of this sport changed nationwide during this time period as female athletes introduced gymnastics and acrobatics into cheerleading.

Currently, the WSU cheer squad is made up of approximately 12 female and 12 male cheerleaders. Performing at home and away football games, cougar alumni across the nation can join the cheerleaders in a boisterous "GO COUGS!" The cheerleaders also perform at volleyball, basketball and various alumni pep rallies.

Tryouts for the 2009/2010 Cheerleading squad were in April 2009. However, we are looking to add one more girl, and more men to our team at Fall Tryouts on Friday, August 28th, 2009! If you are interested in becoming a cheerleader at WSU, please click on the tryouts link to the left, or contact WSU Spirit Program Coordinator Ivy Wang, at iwang@wsu.edu. Thank you for your interest!
